Resident Monroe Barkman gives out candy to trick-or-treaters.

Life Care Center of LaGrange, Indiana, opened its doors as a safe place for local children to trick-or-treat on Oct. 28, 2016.

Residents at the skilled nursing and rehab center lined the hallways with hand-decorated bags filled with candy – 500 pounds total! About 225 guests attended, and residents enjoyed seeing the children’s fun costumes and young faces.

Some of the residents dressed up as well, several in decorated masks, and family members and associates helped out with the event to keep the bags filled so they could continue to hand out candy for two hours.

“One special story from the evening was this little girl who for three years has spent time talking with one of our residents and gotten a picture with her,” said Michelle Watson, director of rehab services. “She was thrilled when she located this specific resident, and the resident was so happy to see the pictures from the two years prior.”

The children left with buckets overflowing with candy, and they also got a Halloween cookie on their way out.
